        Two Early 80s Cars, Two Different Stories Today

        There’s a 2dr Toyota Starlet kp-62 for sale on FB. From what I remember it’s 1.2li, 4speed fwd.

        There’s also an 2dr ’82 Mitsubishi Colt for sale, also 1.2li (might be up to 1.4 ~ 1.6), also 4 speed fwd.

        Toyota = 700k
        Mitsubishi = 100k

        Let me tell you what I think.

        • At the time in the 80s, these were pretty much valued the same. Neither car was any more or less special than the other one.
        • I would say the Mitsubishi is the faster of the two but not much. Toyota cars while economical, super reliable and built to last were pretty heavy, and the Starlet was a prime example.
        • Mitsubishi in the 80s was special. The Lancers were trailblazing the rally circuits around the world, they were also reliable at the time and were just as highly prized as Toyota.
        • Of the two, I like how the Mitsu looks more than the Starlet, which is really no more than a straight up econo box to me.
        • I’ve driven the two and there’s not much to compare. Again, the Starlet is just a teeny weeny bit heavier, the Mitsu just felt a little lighter, but that could have been due to the condition of those particular cars more than anything.
        • The Mitsubishi came with a fancy thing called a ‘Super Shift‘ tranny although this didn’t have it. But to me if you can find one that is insanely collectible.

        I’ll just say it. The Toyota is waaay over priced, and the Colt is a diamond in the rough and should be just as if not a little bit more desirable. As nostalgia machines they’re about equal. Performance and drivability wise probably same as well.

        In other words here’s a chance to get a car p600k less and enjoy the same benefits.

        You have to wonder how super low mileage cars exist. I heard a story once about how an OFW bought a car then would only use it when they come back. I have an OFW neighbor that does exactly that, so yeah it’s feasible. But 43000 kms over 33 years is only 1303km/year and that is crazy.

        In any case, here it is in all its glory. A hardly used ‘big body’ 93 Seventh generation E100 Corolla.

        Like the other Toyota post, also set at P220,000, which is still a big ask even though this one is newer. For that price, it would be difficult for the next owner to make it a daily driver as its only claim to fame really is that low mileage. So that means only collectors will want this, so it can sit in their garage for another 30+ years to be gawked at.

        I love the Big Body btw, to me the best car I ever drove (my sister’s), and if it were sold today exactly as it is, with zero power steering and ‘pawis’ crank windows, I’d still want to buy it.
